Time Woven in Hanji
On May 5th, 2025, at Project Space Artis in Mapo-gu, Seoul, the special workshop held during the 8th Biennale of the International Fiber Art Festival (FAF) became more than just a class—it was a sensory experience where time, memory, and material intertwined. At the center of it all was the artist Cha Young-Soon, whose world of paper and fiber dissolved boundaries between the natural and the handmade.
2025년 5월 5일, 마포구의 프로젝트 스페이스 아르티스에서 열린 제 8회 국제섬유미술제(FAF Biennale) 비엔날레의 워크샵은 단순한 수업을 넘어선, 시간과 기억을 엮어낸 감각적 체험이었다. 그 중심에는 종이와 섬유의 경계를 허문 차영순 작가의 깊은 예술세계가 있었다.
Tradition breathes and Memory weaves
The paper works, crafted through the artist’s hands, felt alive—less like objects and more like vessels of time. Seeing the raw materials firsthand, we glimpsed the silent history embedded within each sheet. The next parts introduced handmade silk paper and vegetal paper, both created by the artist. As we listened to the explanations and gently touched the surfaces, it became clear: these were not just paper samples but tiny universes, each holding stories of nature, technique, and contemplation.
One of the most breathtaking moments came during the demonstration of Textile Paper, made from silk organza and silk batting. The delicate transparency of the material, paired with its quiet strength, mesmerized the room. Someone softly whispered, “This isn’t paper—it’s breathing fabric.”
Finally, the highlight of the workshop: the live demonstration of Hanji Spinning. Watching the artist twist thin layers of Hanji into cord-like threads was like witnessing a ritual. Participants followed suit, spinning their own cords with care.
한지의 고유한 결과 촉감을 느끼다
워크샵은 한지 작품 감상으로 조용히 문을 열었다. 재료를 직접 눈앞에서 보게 되었을 때, 종이 속에 흐르는 세월을 들여다보는 듯했다. 이어지는 수제 비단종이와 식물성 종이의 감상과 강의는 각 재료가 지닌 고유한 결과 촉감을 온몸으로 느끼게 했다. 이 종이들은 단순한 평면이 아니라 기억과 자연, 기술이 얽힌 작은 우주였다.
특히 참가자들이 가장 숨을 멈추었던 순간은 ‘섬유 페이퍼’ 제작 기법을 소개할 때였다. 비단 노방과 비단솜이 혼합된 이 특별한 종이는, 전통과 현대, 견고함과 투명함이 어우러진 독특한 결을 자랑했다. 그 미세한 촉감은 말을 잃게 했고, 누군가는 조심스레 그 종이를 손끝으로 어루만지며 "종이가 아니라 숨 쉬는 천 같다"고 속삭였다.
마지막으로 펼쳐진 ‘한지사’ 제작 시연에서는, 수십 겹의 얇은 한지를 실처럼 꼬아내는 작가의 손길을 따라, 참가자들의 손도 함께 움직였다. 각자의 리듬으로 꼬아낸 종이실은, 모두의 손이 모여 만든 공동의 기억이 되었다. 이날의 워크샵은 종이의 본질을 넘어선 예술의 가능성을 체험하게 한 특별한 순간이었다. 그것은 단지 예술을 ‘보는’ 것이 아닌, 예술과 함께 ‘호흡하는’ 경험이었다.
